i'm not afraid to get it right.

Usually I roll my eyes at people who hate on popular things just because they're popular- and you can usually tell when someone's doing that, too, there's a certain kind of tone and arguement that goes with it, heh.

But I keep getting linked to this "Fandom is" essay, which concludes with something like "fandom is where you found yourself", and I gotta say, that's partially true for me, but at the same time, wow, no.

Guys, let's keep in mind, before we go all flowers and kittens and ponies on each other: Fandom is wanting to punch someone you've never met and who lives at least two countries away from you. Fandom is wishing the internet had an Instant-Kill button. Fandom is cliques, backstabbing, wank wank wank, fandom is that constant fucking post in fanficrants asking "Why? Why slash? Why do you slash, you dirty perverts?!" Fandom is headdesking at yet another newbie asking the same damn obvious question, or screeching in rage at yet another oldbie who's acting like they're the only one who knows anything about anything. Fandom is wanting to reach through your computer screen and take your precious characters away from people who are putting them into frilly dresses and making them giggle a lot. Fandom is wanting to reach through your computer screen and steal the far superior skills of that writer who just seems to nail the damn story EVERY. TIME. And you can't no matter how hard you try.

Fandom is signing up for deadlines you KNOW you'll never complete. Fandom is anonymous memes full of raging hatred. Fandom is faking your own death, then coming back randomly to go "Just kidding, guys!" and watching all your friends freak out over your sudden ressurection. Fandom is mass defriendings because you express an opinion; Fandom is a sudden influx of friendings because you said something and a whole bunch of people you never met are here to go "word".

Fandom is cringing at that person who won't stop posting their terrible fanart in your community, no matter how few comments they get. Fandom is biting back a snarl when something you KNOW is terrible is recced with glowing reviews. Fandom is never enough comments on your masterpiece. Fandom is too MANY "omg more buttsecks plz" comments on your masterpiece. Fandom is irritation. Fandom is timewasting. Fandom is animosity the likes of which you've never encountered before.

I love fandom, and I believe it's a great and wonderful thing, but let's not kid ourselves, guys: Fandom is pain.

Now. Don't forget, children, Auntie Shoi loves you. X)
